With the Duet+ models, Yamaha have employed state-of-the-art innovative techniques to create a modern instrument with classic tone, response and playability. Yamaha have added a protective layer next to the air column – an idea so simple – yet effective that it has turned the clarinet world on it’s head. The combination of precious tonewood and state-of-the-art resin is not simply a “Duet” of tradition and technology – it’s a “Plus” advantage indeed!

Yamaha first used this innovative technology with their oboes to great success. After extensive engineering, specific to the instrument, Yamaha bought their Duet + technology to the Clarinet. The principle is simple – the upper body joint is drilled out slightly larger around the bore and tone-holes. Hi-tech thermoplastic ABS resin is then injected into the cavity, instantly bonding and forming to the inner shape of the clarinet. The results are remarkable with the coating engineered to preserve the classic tonal virtue of traditional clarinets without the reliability challenges. The outward appearance is indistinguishable from conventional all-wooden models.

Additionally, the Yamaha YCL450 Duet+ features a new bell and 65mm barrel design, both of which are similar to those utilised in Yamaha’s acclaimed V Series. Highly durable “blue” steel springs are also used throughout resulting in a smooth, easy action which is a delight to play.

The Yamaha YCL450 Duet+ features Valentino pads. Valentino pads offer a clear dark tone, light resistance and quick response that make it easy to obtain good tone and comfortable playability even for beginners. Compared to normal pads, they are harder to tear, offer superior stability due to changes in humidity, are highly durable, and easy to maintain. Valentino pads are used by both solo, orchestral, and jazz musicians around the globe, and have been praised for their excellence by all.

The YCL-450 Duet+ delivers a professional quality sound with an easy response. The new bell design gives improved intonation and projection, especially in the all-important lower register, while the new barrel enhances the 450’s response, flexibility and tonal focus.
